A History of Service
in Fort Wayne, IN, and Beyond
Hires has been locally owned and operated by the Hire family since 1927. At that time, the late Aubrey “Doc” Hire opened the first store at 2030 Broadway. Doc sold the family piano to get enough money to pay the first month’s rent. Doc’s children, Dick, Doris, and Bob, their children, and many committed employees grew the business to eight stores.
Richard Hire, president for over 50 years, had a great vision of displaying auto parts in a large showroom. His vision included providing a large selection, and discounting the items to the consumer. Richard would only settle for first place when it came to pricing and service. The formula proved to be very successful. Richard ‘s winning spirit carried over to the Fort Wayne Speedway where he raced to victory in the early 1950s. Currently, Hires has two locations in the greater Fort Wayne area operated by the 3rd and 4th generation of the Hires family.
