Is Your Check Engine Light On?

Find check engine light services at Hires Automotive Center in Fort Wayne, IN. You are cruising along the highway. Everything is cool; the car runs fine. But suddenly, you notice that the “check engine” light has popped on.

That little yellow (or possibly red or orange in some cars) light on your dash could mean many things. It could blink or remain static. Is it your oil pressure or airflow sensor?

Here, we will take a look at what all of these things could mean, and how to address them. We have technicians who can properly diagnose common warning signs on your dashboard. Call Hires North at (260) 489-5734 or Hires South at (260) 447-4023 or message us online.

Common Warning Signs on Your Dashboard

1. Check Engine Light: Flashing vs. Static:
If a yellow “check engine” light (CEL) illuminates on the dash, there is no need to panic or pull over immediately. While it does mean something is amiss, it is most likely not an indication of a catastrophic engine failure. (If it was, you would probably know it from how your vehicle is — or is not — responding.) Continue on your journey (perhaps a bit more gingerly), and make plans to take your car in for diagnostic tests.

However, if the light blinks, your engine may endure immediate damage. If this is what you see, rather than a static, yellow light, this means there is a big issue. It is essential to address this problem immediately. Hires Automotive Center’s technicians have the computerized equipment and knowledge to properly diagnose your vehicle and recommend a solution.

And what if the light goes out? This does not mean that it fixed itself. But the computer will save that information so we can download it and see what is wrong. It is cheaper to diagnose a problem before you break down rather than once a component breaks.

Call Hires Automotive Center, and come in. We can check out those pesky lights on your dash and fix it right the first time.

2. OIL PRESSURE LIGHT:
The old-fashioned oil can image indicates that there is an issue with your car’s oil pressure system. Low oil, faulty sensors, or oil pumps not circulating enough to properly lubricate your engine are a few common issues.

3. TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT:
This image signals that the pressure in one or more tires is too low or too high. It is important to address this issue promptly. Driving with too low or too high pressure could be unsafe and cause premature tire wear. If your light does come on, drive into Hires Automotive Center, and we will check it out for you.

4. ENGINE TEMPERATURE WARNING:
If you see this symbol pop up, it means that your engine is overheating. This most likely has to do with your coolant (antifreeze), being triggered by a number of issues. It is important to address this soon, as to avoid further damage. For more information, download our engine management pdf

5. TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT:
This indicates the activation of your traction control system. The traction control system utilizes your anti-lock brake system to improve your control during rain and snowy conditions.

6. TRACTION CONTROL MALFUNCTIONS:
This indicates a problem with your traction control system. It could be a problem with a sensor or your anti-lock brakes. Address this issue sooner rather than later.

7. ANTI-LOCK BRAKE WARNING LIGHT:
If your “ABS” warning lights up while you are driving, it means that your system has issues. Your anti-lock system monitors all four wheels’ speed. If a wheel locks up, it will automatically apply and release pressure to your brakes. Doing so will prevent a wheel from locking up and allowing you to maintain control of your vehicle. It is essential to have this light checked out to keep your ABS system working correctly.

8. BATTERY ALERT:
This symbol indicates that there is an issue with your vehicle’s charging system. It may or may not be your battery. It could be dirty battery posts or an alternator, to name a couple. Again, it is vital to have it checked out before your vehicle leaves you stranded.
